Design Approach

A typical task map is used to map out the goals and motivations that a person has when they are using the product

Research
Problem discovery and definition

Research is a critical but often overlooked and undervalued function of my job. It's important that I make time to understand and empathize with the people that I'm building for and the problems we're solving for them.

Common Methods

Interviews
Card Sorting
Personas
Surveys
Mind mapping
Scenarios and storyboards

Tools

Whiteboards
Optimal Sort
Persona Templates
Survey Monkey
I took this picture of a recent Affinity mapping session, where we combined, grouped and summarized feedback from a usability study

Collaboration
Facilitating design Studios, reviews, demos, and retrospectives

It's important to work with people from a variety of different backgrounds, to gain unique and insightful perspectives. My goal is to build a shared understanding of the people and problems we're solving. We need to be focussed and feel like we're all moving towards a common goal.

Common Methods

Stakeholder meetings
Affinity mapping
Design studios
Working groups
Hackathons

Tools

Whiteboards
Powerpoint presentations
Project Plans
Sketch, Photoshop, Illustrator
A sample of a typical lo-fidelity prototype.

Prototyping
Building testable prototypes

Sometimes a pen and paper is all you need to build a prototype and get valuable feedback on ideas. I also use a rapid prototyping framework to quickly build up a prototype that looks and behaves like a real web application without a lot of investment or any need from backend engineering teams.

Common Methods

Paper prototypes
Whiteboard sketches
Video and animated gifs
Static mockups
Interactive prototypes

Tools

Paper
Whiteboards
Sketch, Photoshop, Illustrator
Screenflow and Camtasia
Sublime Text, Visual Studio Code
I test early and often to ensure that we're adding real value and improving workflows for the people who use our product

Testing
Testing hypotheses with real people and customers

We're solving real problems so we need to talk to the people we're building for to test our interfaces and validate our assumptions. I test for language, layout, style & emphasis, and information hierarchy, and measure how intuitive, easy, and enjoyable it is to use what I've built.

Common Methods

Hallway testing
Video chat and screen sharing
Community forums
Web-based prototypes

Tools

Morae
Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket
Slack
We use a physical board to track work and collaborate on development tasks

Agile Development
Working with developers to build out features and user stories

I work directly with architects and back-end engineers to define, break-down and prioritize the development work needed to implement my designs. I understand the constraints and technical hurdles that we need to jump to execute effectively and be successful. We work in short sprints and prioritize our work based on business needs and client feedback.

Common Methods

Daily standups
Story mapping
Sprint planning
Demos and retrospectives
I do most of my prototyping in HTML, CSS, and Javascript

Front-End Development
Coding the UI components and workflows

I'm actively involved in the front-end development of my team, contributing to style and layout changes and prototyping new interactions and workflows. I employ several templating libraries and extensions to enable rapid prototyping and quick, on-the-fly iterations to immediately improve the interfaces I'm working on.

Common Methods

Page templating (Liquid, Handlebars, Angular)
Responsive grids
MVC development patterns
Controls and animations using Javascript and Jquery
Sass & Less templating
Data modeling and API design
